TSUKIJI

The Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo was built in 1935, after the great Kanto earthquake shook Tokyo definitively into the 20th century.  At the end of every year, retail buyers outnumber the usual store and restaurant buyers, as japan gets ready to celebrate the new year - transforming the market into a place of joy and renewal.  The market has recently gotten a reprieve from its planned move to new and shiny quarters.  I hoped that its well-worn surfaces will be with us for years to come, but the market was demolished in 2019 t make way for a highway interchange - part of the preparations for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.
