The Fourth Chair 001

Joseph Kosuth Created his work ‘One and Three Chairs’ over half a century ago, in 1965. He presented the same chair in three different ways: the chair itself, the chair photographed and print of a dictionary definition of the word chair. As such these were a comprehensive catalogue of representation in their time.

The Fourth Chair presents two mechanical representation aids, made two hundred years apart: A Camera Lucida - used to present a virtual image of the subject on top of a piece of drawing paper; and a smartphone, which today is the most prevalent way of taking a photograph. These are weighed against the subject: a chair.

The Fourth Chair is part of an ongoing exploration of digital representation and its role and function in expanding our catalogue of means of representation.

The Fourth Chair was part of the SCM MFA graduation exhibition at the Singing Waves gallery in June of 2019, as well as part of the ‘Freedom Eyes’ exhibition at Lumenvisium gallery in Hong Kong in August of 2019.
